Better snacks for your 4 PM tea

Elaras team · Updated 19 Oct 2026 · General wellness information, not medical advice

Evening hunger is real. The trick is to have a better option ready before the bajji or biscuit packet tempts you.

Chickpeas, curd and South Indian snacks

Eight easy swaps

  1. A cup of chickpea or green gram sundal
  2. A handful of roasted chana (pottukadalai) or peanuts
  3. A seasonal fruit: guava, banana, papaya or orange
  4. Sprouts with onion, tomato and lemon
  5. Roasted makhana or puffed rice with vegetables
  6. A glass of buttermilk with curry leaves and ginger
  7. Ragi or wheat roti roll with vegetables
  8. Boiled corn with a squeeze of lemon

Make it stick

  • Prepare the snack in the morning so it's ready at 4 PM.
  • Keep the portion small: it's a snack, not a meal.
  • Have tea with less sugar and without extra biscuits on the side.
