Adding protein to an idli breakfast
Elaras team · Updated 19 Oct 2026 · General wellness information, not medical advice
Idli and dosa are a great start to the day. With a few small additions they become a more balanced, filling breakfast.
Why it matters
A breakfast that is mostly rice and urad batter can leave you hungry again by mid-morning. Adding a protein source helps you stay full and steady until lunch.
Three easy ideas
- Thicker sambar, more of it. A dal-rich sambar with vegetables adds protein and fibre. Have a full bowl, not just a little for dipping.
- Peanut or roasted-gram chutney. Pottukadalai or peanut chutney adds protein compared with coconut chutney alone.
- One extra item on the side. A small bowl of sundal, a cup of curd, a glass of milk or a boiled egg.
Make it a habit
Pick just one of these ideas and use it every day this week. Next week, add a second.
